ACTIVITIES:
Sports & Water Sports
Canberra has plenty of sport and
water sport complexes for everyone
to keep fit and healthy. The Active
Leisure Center is the city's largest
leisure facility which offers modern
sporting, theatre, recreational and
meeting facilities. The center
provides heated swimming pool and
children's pool. The Swimming
Complex at the Australian Institute
of Sport is also an inspiring place
for swimmers as it is where Olympian
swimmers are trained before being
sent to compete for the medals.
Moreoever, it is equipped with sauna
and spa for your relaxation after
stroking some laps. The Canberra
Olympic Pool and Gym also offers
both indoor and outdoor pool as well
as beach volleyball courts and a
gymnasium which are accessible by
the public. Or, if after a visit to
all of these places you still yearn
for the salty breeze, Batemans Bay
offers the closest beach you can go
and bask in the seaside
atmosphere.
Cycling & Walking
As a well-designed capital city with
smooth roads and lovely cycling
tracks, Canberra is a mutual ideal
place for cyclists and walkers. For
example, the nature reserves around
Canberra have a large range of
walking paths, or you can drop by
John Knight Memorial Park where
walking and cycling paths surround
the lake and a choice of sailing is
available. The sight of black swans,
ducks, waterfowl and other
waterbirds helps to enhance the
peaceful and meditative mood of the
park. Another great place for such a
laidback repose is Lake Burley
Griffin which is surrounded by the
capital buildings and offers a
wonderful resting spot in the heart
of the city. A visit to the
Tuggeranong Lake in the Tuggeranong
town center where there are
skateboarding park, playground
equipment and several picnic spots
are also
recommended.
Entertainment
Visitors to Canberra will find that
the city is absolutely far from
being dull. Colorful festivals and
lively events fill the calendar of
the nation's capital, and the
vibrant scene of cinema, theatre,
museum, restaurant, dancing, live
music and casino can occupy one's
energy for as long as they have time
for joy and
entertainment.
Dining & Drinking
All cuisines imaginable are
represented throughout Canberra and
its surrounding suburbs, and if you
have time it’s well worth trying
out some of them. Snack bars and
take-away are everywhere; and for a
pleasant outdoor lunch there are
more than 60 picnic areas to choose
from, many equipped with gas or
electric barbecues. In addition to
some 200 restaurants in this tiny
territory, Canberra’s many clubs
also serve very inexpensive meals in
a typical Aussie atmosphere. On the
ground level of the City Market
shopping mall, on the corner of
Bunda Street and Ainslie Avenue,
there’s an excellent food court,
as well as a large supermarket. The
Asian restaurants are concentrated
on Woolley Street in Dickson,
whereas other inexpensive eateries
can be directed towards the
University Student Union on
University Avenue.
EVENTS & FESTIVALS:
Royal Canberra Show
This show focuses on the display of livestock and Australian farming life.
The show features horse shows and exhibits such as bottled fruit, the best rose
and the biggest pumpkin, as well as a fantastic Grand Parade. There are
also rides and show bags for the children.
National Folk
Festival
Entertainment and feast go hand in hand in this fun-for-all festival.
The National Folk Festival is an annual Easter event held at Canberra's
Exhibition Park where musicians, dancers, and poets from around the world
converge and entertain the crowds with their performances. The younger
audience are also entreated to a separate Kid's
Festival within the event.
Floriade-Australia's celebration of Spring
Floriade is a huge annual celebration of spring in Canberra.
Thousands of colorful and invigorating flower beds are put on display at the
Commonwealth Park during mid-September to mid-October with a theme that varies
every year. Exciting live entertainment as well as wonderful craft and
cuisine are also provided in addition to the awe-inspiring floral
displays.
Canberra International Film Festival
The Canberra International Film Festival houses an extraordinary collection of
films which are worthy of public recognition. The screening of obscure
films by both unknown and well-acclaimed directors and filmmakers helps to
broaden the human mind and reminds the audience that cinema is far more than
just pure entertainment.
Canberra International Chamber Music Festival
The annual Canberra International Chamber Music Festival provides organized live
performances in unique venues such as embassies
and ambassadorial residences every late April or early May. This 10-day
long festival in celebration of the glorious chamber music offers visitors a
chance to tune in their ears to both medieval and modern music performed by
Australian as well as international musicians.
National Multicultural
Festival
Food, films, theatrical performances, music, and artwork from
around the world abound in the National Multicultural Festival which celebrates the diverse
population of Canberra and the city's birthday. The festival is held every
February at the Civic Square and the admission is totally free.
Australian Science Festival
A five minute walk from central Canberra stands the National Convention Center
where the Australian Science Festival is held every year. A vast range
of events including exhibitions and demonstrations, tours to scientific
institutions, workshops and activities are provided for the interest of all
ages.Summernats Car Festival
Besides being an annual New Year's Event, the Summernats is a festival that
attract automobile enthusiasts from around the world. The even features
car shows, car merchandise, live entertainment, and various exciting car-related
competitions.
Canberra Fringe Festival
Clubs, restaurants and cafes in the heart of Canberra is where the Canberra
Fringe Festival brings party with fringe arts, theater, comedy and cabaret shows
